It's the first thing a lot of people try once they've got a rough capture: run it through Topaz or similar and hope it comes out looking HD. The reality is more interesting — and more useful — than a straight yes or no: there's a right and a wrong way to point AI at old tape, and most of the disappointment comes from expecting it to do something it simply can't.
I dug into what AI upscaling genuinely can and can't do for VHS here: https://digital-archivist.com/2026/05/28/ai-upscaling-doesnt-fix-old-tapes/
But I'd rather hear your case than lecture at you: what are you hoping to fix, and what does the footage actually look like — noisy, soft, an interlaced mess, faces you want sharper? Post a frame or describe it and let's work out whether upscaling will help or just rearrange the mess. No question's too basic here.
